WE ARE FAMILY

I would like to recommend to you, with pleasure and enthusiasm, the “We Are Family — Marriage and Family for Homosexual Couples Too” campaign. As the daughter of a lesbian mother, I can raise my guitar-playing, song-writing, child-rearing hand to attest that something very good indeed can come from children in “non-standard families.” Fairly jolly artists, for example, but also most definitely something more civic-minded, if that concerns you. For my part, I’m happy and grateful for everything I learned long ago through this, my family situation: inward and outward flexibility, above all. Understanding in exceptional circumstances. A rather courageous familiarity with limits and with dreams. And a knowledge, absorbed from infancy onward, that there are many paths to happiness. Along with that came a few quirks and tics, free of charge, just like in any family, as well as a little baggage that I take with self-composure. On the whole, not the worst toolkit for a joyful, rule-breaking life in a world that, in any event, doesn’t follow many rules.
